Cape Kamenjak: coast, trails and access near Premantura

Kamenjak near Premantura has an indented coast and unpaved trails. A coastal walk also leads to dinosaur footprints almost 100 million years old.

For a trip from Bale to Istria’s southern tip, head towards Premantura, south of Pula. Beyond the village lies Lower Kamenjak, a protected landscape of coves, rocky shores and tracks through grassland, scrub and woodland. This is the area usually meant when people talk about swimming at Kamenjak. Upper Kamenjak lies on the other side of Premantura, towards Volme, and offers a separate area for walking.

Coves and safety at sea

Pinižule and Njive coves and Kolombarice form part of a coast where swimming spots alternate with rocky stretches. Pinižule also has a fitness trail, allowing you to combine time by the sea with outdoor exercise. Unpaved tracks across the peninsula connect the different coves.

Sea currents are a concern in the open water around the southern peninsula. The area between Kršine and Fenoliga carries a particular warning, so we do not recommend swimming across to the islets. Avoid jumping from rocks or entering sea caves when there are waves.

Walking and cycling routes

Cape Grakalovac preserves dinosaur footprints dating back around 98 million years. An educational walking trail leads to them, giving a shorter coastal walk a specific destination even when swimming is not on the agenda.

For a longer bike ride, the Orhideja route covers 12 kilometres. The coastal section is moderately demanding, and the unpaved tracks call for a bike suited to that surface. Walkers should bring footwear for rocky terrain and their own water.

On Upper Kamenjak, the Gradina sensory and educational trail is adapted for blind and partially sighted visitors. It lies between Premantura and Volme, away from Lower Kamenjak’s southern swimming coves.

Vehicle access and visiting rules

Entry on foot or by bicycle is free. Motor vehicles are charged seasonally, and the charging period for 2026 ended on 30 September. Drive only on marked roads and park in designated areas, not on grassland. These grasslands are protected habitats shaped in part by generations of grazing.

• Keep dogs on a lead.
• Camping requires special permission from the managing authority.
• Open fires are prohibited on Lower Kamenjak, including use of public fire pits and gas barbecues.
• Leave plants, fossils and other natural finds where they are.
