Ljubljana: a day-trip guide from Bale

Explore Ljubljana on foot, from the riverside to the castle above the old town. Along the Ljubljanica, you pass Plečnik’s bridges and the market arcades.

Set aside a full day for Ljubljana from Bale. The bridges, market and streets below the castle are close enough to form a continuous walk through the centre along the Ljubljanica. Reaching the castle involves a climb or a funicular ride. For the afternoon, choose between Tivoli Park and a river cruise rather than trying to fit everything in.

From Prešeren Square to the Dragon Bridge

Prešeren Square is a useful starting point. Cross the Triple Bridge towards the old town. Architect Jože Plečnik added two pedestrian crossings, built between 1929 and 1932, beside the older stone bridge of 1842. What had been a single narrow crossing became a broad space for walking across the river and pausing by the balustrades.

On the far bank, turn left towards the market and follow the arcades to the Dragon Bridge. Its four large dragons belong to the Art Nouveau city of the early 20th century. Built in 1900 and 1901, the bridge predates Plečnik’s transformation of the centre. This short riverside stretch lets you see the difference between the two periods without a long detour.

The market, lunch and Odprta kuhna

The Central Market includes outdoor stalls on Vodnikov trg and Pogačarjev trg, as well as covered shopping areas. Plečnik designed the long riverside arcades, with the fish market on the lower level. Visit in the morning, when you can combine fruit and vegetable shopping with bread, cheese or cured meats for a simple meal along the way.

On Fridays during the warmer part of the year, Pogačarjev trg hosts Odprta kuhna, the Open Kitchen. Chefs cook at the stalls, allowing you to put together lunch from several restaurants. The event depends on the weather and is not a daily part of the market. On other days, stay in the old town for a meal and save coffee for one of the terraces along the Ljubljanica.

In autumn 2026, work on Plečnik’s first arcade and first loggia is scheduled to continue until mid-November. The shops remain open and events on Pogačarjev trg continue, with temporary pedestrian arrangements around the works.

The castle above the old town

From Vodnikov trg, the Študentovska pot path climbs to Ljubljana Castle. The funicular leaves from nearby Krekov trg and is useful if you would rather avoid the uphill walk. The castle ticket includes the viewing tower, the permanent exhibition on Slovenian history and the Museum of Puppetry. Tickets are available with or without a return funicular journey.

Back below the hill, walk through Mestni trg and continue towards Stari trg. This takes you through the old town at the foot of the castle. Return towards the Triple Bridge along the Ljubljanica and take a break by the river.

An afternoon on the river or in Tivoli

A cruise on the Ljubljanica offers another view of the bridges and riverside buildings. One option is the 45-minute trip aboard the Ljubljana tourist boat, departing from the pier at Ribji trg. The route covers the river between Špica and the Dragon Bridge, including the banks south of the old town while you rest your feet. Cruises do not run when river conditions are unsuitable.

For a longer walk among trees, head west from the centre into Tivoli Park. The Jakopič Promenade leads towards Tivoli Mansion and hosts outdoor photography exhibitions. Keep this part of the city separate from your castle visit: Tivoli Mansion is a different building in the park west of the centre, not a continuation of the climb from the old town.

Driving and parking

To drive a car on the Slovenian motorway towards Ljubljana, you need an e-vignette for the appropriate vehicle category, linked to the registration number. The exemption for the coastal H5 and H6 roads does not cover the onward A1 motorway journey to Ljubljana.

P+R Dolgi Most, at the southwestern entrance to the city, is a practical choice when arriving from Koper. Leave your car beside Tržaška cesta and continue to the centre by city bus, for example on route 6. This lets you park before entering the central streets.

If you also want a full visit to Postojna Cave, we recommend two separate day trips. Combining the cave, castle and city walk in one day leaves little time for Ljubljana between journeys.
