Venice: a guide to a day trip from Bale
A first trip from Bale to Venice can centre on Rialto and St Mark’s. Choose Dorsoduro for modern art and a stop for wine and Venetian cicchetti.
Allow a full day for Venice and choose one longer indoor visit in advance. St Mark’s Basilica or the Doge’s Palace can be the main visit alongside a walk through the city. The palace, several museums and an extra trip to the islands are too much for a day that also includes the return to Bale.
Rialto and the market district
The stone Rialto Bridge crosses the Grand Canal in a single arch. Antonio da Ponte designed it in the late 16th century, replacing earlier wooden bridges. On the western side lies Venice’s former commercial centre, with the fish market on Campo della Pescaria and the surrounding market area. Cross to the eastern side to continue through the San Marco district towards St Mark’s Square.
The basilica and the Doge’s Palace: two different visits
The mosaics and layers of art accumulated over centuries are the reason to go inside St Mark’s Basilica. Construction of the present church began in 1063, and mosaic decoration started in the 11th century. Tourist visits require a reserved entry slot. The basilica, the golden Pala d’Oro altarpiece, the museum with the Loggia dei Cavalli and the bell tower are different ticket options, so basic admission does not include every area.
Beside the basilica, the Doge’s Palace was the seat of government of the Venetian Republic. The route leads through the Senate and other government chambers, decorated with works by Tintoretto and Veronese, to rooms used for the administration of justice. It also includes the enclosed Bridge of Sighs, leading to the New Prisons. Set aside a part of the day for the palace: walking from the state rooms to the prisons gives you an introduction to the city’s political history.
Dorsoduro: Peggy Guggenheim and a bacaro stop
Cross the Accademia Bridge to reach Dorsoduro. Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal houses the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Among its works is René Magritte’s Empire of Light, which places a nocturnal street and a bright daytime sky in the same painting. The collector lived here and opened her home to the public. Since 1980, the palace has operated as a museum of the Guggenheim Foundation. The low building with its Istrian stone façade is unfinished: only the first level of the planned multi-storey palace was built.
For a short break in the same district, we suggest Cantine del Vino già Schiavi on Fondamenta Nani. This is a bacaro, a Venetian wine tavern, serving wine by the glass and cicchetti, small bites to eat with a drink. There are no seats, so you eat and drink standing up. It suits a pause during a walk better than a long seated lunch. Afterwards, continue to the Zattere waterfront along the Giudecca Canal to finish exploring the district.
Getting there from Bale and travelling around Venice
- The Autorimessa Comunale car park on Piazzale Roma is open 24 hours and accepts vehicles up to 2.20 m high. Online reservations are available until midnight the previous day and give priority entry. From the car park, continue on foot or by vaporetto, the city’s passenger boat service.
- Line 1 links Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia railway station, Rialto and San Marco along the Grand Canal. For a first visit, walk one way and take the boat back to see the palace façades facing the water.
- Boat travel from Istria is seasonal. The Adriatic Lines schedule for 2026 covered 1 May to 13 October, with Istrian ports including Pula, Rovinj and Poreč. That period did not mean daily departures from every port, and it is not a schedule for 2027.
Day visitors should also distinguish Venice’s access contribution from attraction tickets. In 2026, it applied on 60 selected days between 3 April and 26 July, rather than throughout the year. October was not included in that calendar. The city access contribution is separate from admission to the basilica and museums.
