Buzet: the old town and local history museum

Explore Buzet through its old town and former trades. The museum preserves a historic kitchen, with separate workshops dotted around the town.

Historic Buzet stands on a hill above Fontana, the newer part of town. As you enter through Vela vrata, look for the relief of St George above the gateway built in 1547. The southern wall and Renaissance tower survive from the defences that protected the hilltop settlement. St Vitus’ Chapel stands outside the walls, in the cemetery below the old town.

The cistern square and parish church

At Vela šterna, the town cistern built in 1788 and 1789, take a look at the Rococo stone enclosure. Alongside the building inscription are the coat of arms of Captain Marc’Antonio Trevisan and a relief of the Venetian lion. Venetian governors’ coats of arms also appear on the palaces: Bembo Palace, built in 1728, retains that of Captain Vicenzo Bembo.

The parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was completed in 1784. Gaetano Callido built its organ three years later. The bell tower beside it dates from 1897, but contains an older bell bearing the year 1541 in Glagolitic script. That inscription therefore does not date the present tower.

A kitchen and traditional crafts in the museum

The local history museum occupies Bigatto Palace on the western town wall. In the ethnographic collection, an old Buzet kitchen and a loom show how residents prepared food and made cloth. Traditional costumes from Ćićarija are displayed alongside them. The archaeological collection and lapidarium reach further back, to prehistoric and ancient finds from the Buzet area.

The museum also includes separate premises in the old town, among them an old bakery and a workshop for making horn combs. These are preserved craft premises, not present-day shops. In September, Subotina po starinski celebrates these old trades and customs, with participants in the streets and squares. Craft demonstrations belong to the event, rather than the town’s everyday programme.

Truffles in the Mirna valley

The countryside around Buzet forms part of the Mirna River area, whose damp soil and woods provide a habitat for white and black Istrian truffles. Autumn is white truffle season, while the various black truffle species have different harvesting periods. You can arrange a demonstration truffle hunt with a local producer alongside your town visit. These outings start at family estates in the surrounding countryside, so allow for a separate trip beyond the old town walk.
