Kastav: the old town and a walk through Loza forest

In Kastav, an old-town visit can continue with a forest walk. Beyond Crekvina, a circular trail leads through Loza past the remains of old lime kilns.

From Fortica to Lokvina

Fortica makes a useful starting point for exploring Kastav, a hill town 365 metres above sea level. The former fortification is now a promenade overlooking Kvarner Bay and Učka. Oštarija Fortica stands beside Matko Laginja Square, so you can include lunch without leaving the old town.

Pass the town loggia, built in 1571, and enter through Voltica, the historic town gate. Streets within the walls lead to Lokvina, a square named after the pond where residents once collected water. The former castle of Kastav's captains also stands here. For a viewpoint in the upper part of town, include Žudika, Kastav's tallest tower.

Crekvina and the way into the forest

From Lokvina, continue to Crekvina, the remains of the large Church of the Assumption built by the Jesuits. Whether the church was ever completed remains uncertain. Its surviving walls and arches now enclose a summer stage, while paths into Kastav's forests begin behind the ruins.

The circular Kastav, Eko-staza and Majevi vrh trail starts at Fortica, passes through the old town and returns via Loza forest. Allow roughly one hour and 40 minutes for the walk. Follow the yellow-and-blue markings in the forest. Along the way are old lime kilns, known locally as japnenice, and a crossing of the former Rapallo border. An optional detour from the main route climbs to Majevi vrh, at 411 metres.

Allow extra time for stops in the old town. Use the trail map for orientation. If you would prefer to continue by the sea after Kastav, Opatija offers a separate stop with a coastal promenade.
