Postojna Cave: train ride, tour and tickets

Postojna Cave in Slovenia is explored by train and on foot. The 90-minute tour takes in chambers of cave formations and an aquarium with olms.

What you see on the tour

The visit begins with a train ride of about two kilometres. You get off at the Great Mountain and continue on foot with a guide, then take the train back towards the exit. The whole route covers around five kilometres, roughly one of them on foot.

In the Beautiful Caves, slender stalactites hang like threads from the ceiling. Further along stands the Brilliant, a white stalagmite that has become the cave’s symbol. An aquarium with olms is near the end of the walking section and is included in the regular tour. The separate Vivarium is an additional exhibition of underground wildlife, not the same attraction.

Clothing, walking and accessibility

The cave stays at around 10 °C throughout the year. Bring a warm jacket and shoes with good grip, even if you leave Bale in summer heat. Photography is allowed without flash or a tripod, but you must not touch the cave formations.

The walking route has a non-slip concrete surface, with an uphill stretch of approximately 200 metres at a 20 per cent gradient and a similar descent. Pushchairs are permitted, but that slope needs to be taken into account. Wheelchair users are advised to take the shorter train-only tour. Pets are not allowed inside the cave.

Planning your arrival

Postojna Cave is open all year, including Sundays and public holidays. Tickets are for a selected time slot and can be bought online or at the ticket office. Arrive at the park at least half an hour beforehand. Boarding starts 15 minutes before departure. You can show a digital ticket on your phone.

Guided tours are available in Slovenian, English, German and Italian. Audio guides cost extra and are also available in Croatian.
