Višnjan Observatory on Tičan: visits and stargazing

Višnjan Observatory on Tičan studies asteroids and introduces visitors to astronomy. Astro Night includes a talk and a tour of the telescope dome.

Tičan and asteroid research

The complex on Tičan hill lies about three kilometres north of Višnjan. Astronomers moved their research here because light pollution was hampering observations at the old observatory in the town. The destination for a dome visit is Tičan, not central Višnjan.

Researchers track asteroids, taking repeated measurements of their positions to help determine their orbits, particularly those of objects passing close to Earth. The dome houses a telescope with a one-metre mirror for this work.

Astro Night: the talk, dome and sky

The evening Astro Night programme begins with a talk about astronomy and the observatory’s research, followed by a visit to the dome. The main telescope is a research instrument and is not used for visitor viewing. Visitors observe through a separate amateur telescope on the meadow, weather permitting. Guides also use a laser to introduce the constellations.

Individual visits follow the published programme dates and require tickets. As of 12 October 2026, no dates are available to book for Astro Night in Croatian or English. This applies to the public programme, not to research work or separately arranged group visits.

School groups and science education

Group visits are arranged in advance, with talks adapted to participants’ ages and interests. Subjects include the Solar System and asteroids. Alongside tourist visits, the centre runs science workshops where children and young people work on projects with mentors. Astronomer and educator Korado Korlević also works with teachers, encouraging children’s curiosity and critical thinking.
