Vrsar: old town, Džamonja sculpture park and a trip from Bale

From the town gates to the viewpoints

The Large Gate beside the Church of St Fosca leads into the old town. Until the second half of the 17th century, residents lived within the walls, and parts of the defensive entrances survive. At the Small Gate beside the Church of St Anthony of Padua, you can still see the wooden structure once used to close the entrance.

Below this church, the St Anthony viewpoint overlooks the harbour and offshore islets. For a different view, continue behind the parish Church of St Martin to the lookout facing Valkanela Bay and the islands off Funtana. Walking through the old town involves climbs and descents, while the waterfront promenade runs along the foot of the hill.

More More and the fishermen of Vrsar

The More More interpretation centre at Dalmatinska 3 explores the town’s fishing life. A digital aquarium depicts the Adriatic underwater world, while tablets and augmented reality let you hear fishermen’s stories. Films and interactive games give children a way to explore marine life and work along the coast.

Admission is free. Visits from 15 September to 15 June require advance arrangements. This is a multimedia exhibition, not an aquarium with live fish.

Sculptures on Džamonja’s estate

On the northern approach to Vrsar, at Valkanela 5, sculptor Dušan Džamonja created a park beside his home and studio. It has been open to visitors since 1981. Large sculptures in metal, stone and other materials stand outdoors, allowing you to walk around them and compare their forms and scale within the landscape.

The park is a separate stop outside the old town, suited to a visit before or after your walk through Vrsar. Entry to the park is free.
