Grocery shopping in and around Bale: supermarkets, bakery and markets

Shop in Bale for everyday top-ups. For a larger grocery shop, we recommend the supermarkets in Rovinj, Vodnjan and Pula.

We consider Studenac in Bale and at San Polo campsite an expensive choice for a full trolley, so we do not recommend it for the main shop if you are watching your budget. Its advantage is convenience. You can pick up bread, drinks or a forgotten ingredient without another drive into a nearby town, particularly if you want to spend a few days in Bale or at the beach.

Shopping in Bale

Both grocery stores in the village are now Studenac: one on Trg La Musa, in the former Ultra store, and the other on Trg palih boraca. Rustica bakery is on the latter square too. San Polo campsite has a separate Studenac store, so campers need not travel into Bale for a small shop.

You enter Robi butcher's shop through Studenac on La Musa, but pay for your meat at a separate till, where cards are accepted. Alongside meat for everyday meals, they sell dry-aged steaks.

Valalta is our first choice for a larger shop

For your main grocery shop from Bale, our first choices are Valalta Discount in Rovinj and Valalta supermarket in Rovinjsko Selo, for their broad selection and good meat. These are two separate stores, not the supermarket inside Valalta campsite. Alongside meat for lunch or a barbecue, you can buy the other groceries for your apartment stay instead of relying on more expensive daily shopping in Bale.

Cromaris has a fish shop next to the Rovinj discount store. They sell fresh fish and fish delicacies, so you can combine your grocery and meat shopping with a visit to the neighbouring fish shop. Cromaris farms fish in the Adriatic. Its range should not be confused with the daily wild catch at the municipal fish market.

Other supermarkets nearby

In Rovinj, Lidl, Plodine and Super Konzum are on Braće Božić street. This is a useful area if you want to compare several stores during one trip. In Vodnjan, you can shop at Plodine and Maxi Konzum. In Pula, options include Lidl on Labinska street and INTERSPAR at Pula City Mall.

Fish markets and food markets: we prefer Pula's Merkat

For a morning shop for fish and other fresh ingredients, we recommend Pula's central market. The fish market is inside the municipal market building, alongside the butchers, while the outdoor stalls sell fruit and vegetables. It is our choice for a trip from Bale to buy ingredients for several meals, combining fish, meat and vegetables in one visit. This is the central market, not the fish market in Veruda.

Rovinj’s municipal fish market is beside Rovinj market on Valdibora. It is convenient if you are already in town and want to combine shopping with a walk around the old centre. Rovinj market is not our first choice for budget shopping in the tourist season. For a trip mainly to buy groceries, we prefer Pula. Cromaris next to Valalta is a separate fish shop outside this market complex.

Market stalls do not sell exclusively produce from nearby farms. Origin and price vary from seller to seller. Shopping at a market does not in itself guarantee local produce or a lower bill.
