Veprinac: the old town above Opatija

Explore Veprinac from its town gate to St Mark’s Church. Along the way, the ethnographic collection introduces life on the slopes of Učka.

A visit to Veprinac begins with a passage through the former municipal building. The town gate has three openings leading into a settlement that was an important local centre before Opatija developed as a resort. The Veprinac Law of 1507 records the customs and rules of that community. The town’s name is commonly linked to veprina, the butcher’s broom plant that grows nearby.

Around the town gate

Before entering the old town, you have the loggia on your right and St Anne’s Church on your left, with an inscription dated 1442. Remains of frescoes were discovered during work inside the church.

The former administrative building, known as the komunšćica, houses an ethnographic collection. Everyday objects from the early 20th century show how people managed life on steep terrain: large woven baskets were used to carry hay and farm produce, while milkmaids carried milk in purpose-made containers. A corn mill is also on display.

Stone steps to St Mark’s

From the gate, stone steps lead up to the parish church of St Mark. Its courtyard gives a clear view of the town’s setting: Opatija lies below, the Kvarner Gulf stretches beyond it, and Učka rises inland. This part of the visit involves steps, an important consideration if you have limited mobility or are bringing a pushchair.
