Lim Bay: a submerged valley and shellfish farming

Lim Bay is the sea-filled end of a long karst valley in western Istria. Underground freshwater alters the salinity where mussels and oysters are farmed.

The bay and its inland valley

The narrow inlet between Rovinj and Vrsar continues inland as Limska draga. The sea occupies the lower part of the valley, while its landward continuation reaches towards Pazin. Together, the bay and inland valley extend for about 35 kilometres. That figure covers both the marine and land sections, rather than the length of the bay alone.

The steep valley sides resemble the shores of fjords, which explains the name in tourist descriptions of Lim. Geographically, it is a karst valley submerged by the sea, also known as the Lim Channel.

Brackish water, mussels and oysters

Underground springs bring freshwater into the bay. Mixing with seawater produces brackish water, with lower salinity than the open Adriatic. Mediterranean mussels and European flat oysters, known locally as limska oštriga, are farmed here. Shellfish farming also gives a food-related focus to a visit, with restaurants such as Viking on the bay shore.

Conditions vary through the water column, and more freshwater is not always better for shellfish. In March 2026, researchers recorded a coastal zone beside a spring in Navi cove where neither mussels nor the two monitored oyster species had settled. At several locations and depths, they measure temperature, salinity, oxygen levels and other environmental indicators.

Two categories of protection

The Lim area includes a protected landscape and a special marine reserve. Landscape protection dates from 1964, while the sea and seabed are covered by separate protection decisions from 1979 and 1980. The bay also plays a role in the reproduction of marine organisms.

A lookout and an organised boat visit offer different ways to understand the area. From higher ground, you can see the bay in relation to its slopes, while from the water the shellfish farms are visible at close range. An organised visit does not imply general permission for independent boating, diving or fishing in the reserve.
