Fantazija quarry near Rovinj: dolomite beds and geological visits
Fantazija quarry near Rovinj exposes pale and dark dolomite beds. A geological column beside the rock face presents stones from the wider Rovinj area.
The quarry, also known as Cava di Monfiorenzo, was protected as a geological natural monument in 1987.
Pale and dark dolomites
The natural rock face exposes the Rovinj geological formation. The pale grey dolomites formed through an early alteration of the sediment, while the dark grey dolomites formed through a later alteration of the rock. Their alternating beds reveal different stages of dolomite formation at the same site.
Features studied here by geologists include wavy laminae, thin layers associated with microorganisms, and cracks formed as the sediment dried out. These traces help reconstruct the former shallow marine environment and periods when the sediment was exposed to the air. A guided geological visit helps you identify them.
A geological column of local rock samples
A geological column assembled from samples collected across the wider Rovinj area stands beside the quarry. It represents deposits from the Middle Jurassic to the latest Early Cretaceous. Alongside the natural section at this one site, you can explore a longer geological sequence from the surrounding area.
Interpretation panels explain the distribution of the rocks and changes in past environments. A geological map places the displayed samples in their local geographical context.
Visits by prior arrangement
Fantazija lies beside the road between Bale and Rovinj, in the Monfiorenzo area outside Rovinj’s old town. Visits are arranged on request with Natura Histrica, the public institution that organises guided geological tours.
