Dvi daske / Journey through the soul of Istria on Veliko Brijun
Mali Brijun - Saturday, 11.07.2026. 20:00. h
Ulysses stages Dvi daske / Journey through the soul of Istria on Veliki Brijun, a monodrama built from the poetry and prose of Mate Balota.
Dvi daske is a monodrama composed from the poetry and prose of Mijo Mirković, known by the pen name Mate Balota. The production is directed by Max and Marina Kostelac.
Mate Balota as an Istrian voice
Dvi daske / Journey through the soul of Istria is more than an island theatre evening. Mate Balota, or Mijo Mirković, matters because he turned Chakavian speech, Istrian experience and social memory into literary language. The monodrama draws on his poetry and prose to return to labour, poverty, the sea, the land and remembered lives, without reducing them to folklore. After two decades away from the stage, the work returns as a renewed encounter with an author whose cultural importance in Istria is still immediate and concrete.
Veliki Brijun and the boat from Fažana
The performance takes place on Veliki Brijun, inside the Ethnographic Museum. The boat from Fažana leaves at 20:00; plan to arrive in Fažana earlier for boarding, parking and the crossing to Brijuni.
Accommodation in Bale
For Dvi daske / Journey through the soul of Istria with Teatar Ulysses, plan the route from Bale to Fažana first: about 14 km, around 18 minutes by car, then the boat to Brijuni. Staying in Bale gives you a quieter base before and after the island programme: accommodation in Bale.
