SIX at the Little Roman Theatre in Pula turns the story of Henry VIII's six wives into a fast, loud and contemporary pop musical.
SIX the Musical comes to Pula as part of the Pula Summer of Culture. The show by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss is shaped as a concert by six queens: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Catherine Parr tell their own stories outside Henry VIII's shadow. Tickets are on sale.
Six queens in a pop-concert format
SIX began at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017 and later became a title associated with the West End and Broadway. Its appeal is not only that it places historical figures in a contemporary costume and pop rhythm. Marlow and Moss use a competition format, solo songs and concert energy to turn the familiar formula “divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived” toward the women who address the audience themselves. Each queen receives her own voice, musical colour and the right to say how long her story was reduced to a royal marriage. That is why SIX is not a history lesson with music attached, but a stage mechanism in which humour, pop, choreography and female vocals work together to reclaim the narrative. For the audience in Pula, the key point is that this musical functions almost like a concert: the pace is quick, the structure direct and the energy closer to a pop performance than to a traditional costume spectacle.
