Teatar Erato performs Ča je život vengo... in Bale, a cabaret tribute to Momčilo Popadić with Marjan Nejašmić Banić, Petar Salečić and Bojan Brajčić.
At Tomaso Bembo Square in Bale, the closing part of Bembo Fest is dedicated to Ča je život vengo..., a cabaret shaped from the songs, prose, reportages and anecdotes of Momčilo Popadić. Bojan Brajčić wrote the adaptation, Teatar Erato produces the performance, and admission is free.
Popadić’s songs, reportages and Dalmatian humour
Momčilo Popadić, often remembered as Pop, was a Split journalist, poet, travel writer and lyricist whose words entered public memory through songs such as Oprosti mi, pape, Skitnica, Tonka, Ča je život vengo fantažija, Svoju zvizdu slidin and other titles. This cabaret does not treat that body of work as simple nostalgia for Adriatic evergreens. The actors draw from it the rhythm of speech, brief anecdotes, aphorisms and a Dalmatian ability to touch serious matters through humour. Bojan Brajčić wrote the adaptation and shaped the material dramaturgically; on stage he performs with Marjan Nejašmić Banić and Petar Salečić. The three performers carry the evening through narration, singing and quick acting shifts, without a large ensemble or excess scenery. That matters because Ča je život vengo... is neither a recital of Oliver Dragojević songs nor a biographical lecture about Popadić. It is a cabaret portrait of an author whose lyrics lived in the voices of Oliver Dragojević, Novi fosili, Meri Cetinić and others, but also in everyday Dalmatian speech.
Cabaret at the close of Bembo Fest
Tomaso Bembo Square gives this performance direct contact with the audience: words, guitar, song and wit work best when they are heard up close. In a September evening in Bale, the audience gets a performance built on the measure of three actors, recognisable lyrics and Popadić’s mix of laughter, melancholy and Mediterranean language.
