At Mali Brijun, Ulysses Theatre performs Na čijoj strani, Ronald Harwood's drama directed by Lenka Udovički and co-produced with SARTR and realstage.

The play is set around the postwar denazification of Wilhelm Furtwängler, conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. Svetozar Cvetković and Ozren Grabarić lead the cast, with Đorđe Krivokapić credited for the translation.

Harwood, art and responsibility

In Na čijoj strani, Ronald Harwood starts from a documented historical conflict that cannot be reduced to a simple verdict of guilt or innocence. After the war, Furtwängler must explain why he stayed in Nazi Germany, why he continued to conduct and how he understands his own responsibility. Opposite him stands the American investigator Arnold, who refuses to treat musical greatness as a shield from work inside a regime's cultural system. Harwood builds the drama through conversation, pressure and moral interrogation: how far can an artist claim to have served only music when the stage, institutions and public prestige were part of a political order. Known for The Dresser and the Oscar-winning screenplay for The Pianist, Harwood again writes about people trying to survive history while facing the cost of conscience.
