Beram - Church of St. Mary of the Rocks
Departure from Bale and discover central Istria by taking a look in the Church of St. Mary of the Rocks close to the picturesque town of Beram. History enthusiasts will be enchanted as it holds one of the most valuable accomplishments of medieval Istrian painting. The late Gothic fresco "Dance of Death" painted by Vincent of Kastav is striking because it shows the transience of life and the equality of everyone faced with death, because it depicts the kings, merchants, cardinals and even the Pope himself together, and is inspired by the period after the so-called "black death". During the restoration period of the 13th century, part of the frescoes were damaged so they were painted over, but were rediscovered in 1913 and are waiting to delight all visitors.
