Nova Vas near Poreč: a village close to Baredine Cave
Nova Vas near Poreč is on the way to Baredine Cave in Gedići. Alongside the underground tour, you can visit a collection of agricultural machinery.
Settlement in the 16th century and St Roch’s Church
The village stands on the road from Poreč to Višnjan, at the junction with the road to Tar. In 1535, the Venetian authorities settled refugees from Dalmatia here as they fled the Ottomans. People had inhabited the surrounding area in prehistoric and Roman times, so this date marks the establishment of the village under Venetian rule rather than the first settlement of the area.
The parish church of St Roch dates from 1853 and occupies the site of an older church dedicated to St Anthony the Abbot. To continue towards Baredine, head to Gedići. The cave entrance and the Traktor Story collection are in a separate complex outside the centre of Nova Vas.
The cave descent and the farming collection
The guided tour of Baredine takes about 40 minutes. You pass through five chambers along a route of around 300 metres, descending to a depth of 60 metres. The tour involves about 270 steps, a physical demand to consider when choosing this excursion. The temperature inside the cave is around 14°C.
Above ground, beside the cave, you can see around fifty old tractors and agricultural machines in the Traktor Story collection. They include a Fordson from 1923. The exhibition traces changes in farming from threshing grain on a threshing floor to mechanisation.
