At Cattunar near Brtonigla, you can compare Malvasias from four soils. Tastings include a guided cellar tour and require a reservation.

One grape variety, four different vineyard sites

In the Cattunar family's vineyards around Brtonigla, Istrian Malvasia grows on grey, black, red and white soils. Since 2010, they have vinified grapes from these sites separately. The 4 Terre range lets you taste four Malvasias from the same vintage and compare how the vineyard sites affect their aromas and flavours.

Grey soil is found at Žmergo, black soil at Škrinjari, red soil at Grum and white soil at Škarline. The differences go beyond colour. Grum has deep terra rossa soil, the black soil lies over marl, and the grey and white soils are rich in lime. The white-soil wines have more pronounced floral and citrus aromas, while those from grey soil show fruit and acacia blossom.

Choosing a tasting

The 4 Terre tasting is designed to compare the four soils. Alongside the four site-specific Malvasias, you taste the aged Malvasias Collina and Nono, adding the effects of ageing to the comparison. If you are more interested in Istrian grape varieties, the Istria programme includes Teran, White Muscat and Muscat Rose as well as Malvasia.

The shorter Cattunar programme lasts 60 minutes and includes four wines without food. The selection is tailored to your preferences and the cellar's current offering. Tvoj izbor lets you choose six wines from the regular range, while Vintage focuses on aged wines, including a surprise bottle from the cellar's archive.

The four longer programmes last 90 minutes. Wines are accompanied by the family's own extra virgin olive oil and a platter of Istrian cheeses, cured meats and truffle bruschetta. Every tasting includes a guided cellar tour.

Reservations and dietary requirements

Tastings require advance booking, with a minimum of two guests for the longer programmes. Guided visits are available in Croatian, Italian, English and German. Depending on the weather, tastings take place in the tasting room or on the terrace.

The platter contains meat and dairy products, and allergens include gluten and nuts. Food can be adapted for intolerances or specific diets by prior arrangement.

Selected gold medals from 2026

Malvazija 4 Terre Crna zemlja 2025 received a gold medal and 92 points at World of Malvasia 2026. Muškat ruža 2022 was awarded gold and 93 points at Vinistra in the same year.
