Giulio Ferenac Wines: Malvasia and Cabernet Franc from Ferenci
In Ferenci near Vižinada, the family-run Giulio Ferenac winery makes Istrian Malvasia, Chardonnay and long-aged red wines. Annual production is around 30,000 bottles, with some wines released in very limited quantities.
Red-soil vineyards above Vižinada
The vineyards lie on Istria’s red soil at an elevation of approximately 297 metres. Istrian Malvasia matures for at least ten months in stainless-steel tanks, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc spend several years ageing in wood and bottle. Chardonnay and Estate rosé complete the range.
Erudita, Cabernet Franc and Superb
Erudita is a Malvasia aged for at least two years in acacia barrels and a further year in bottle. Depending on the vintage, it is made only every two or three years, with no more than 1,000 bottles released. The Cabernet Franc comes from a single vineyard and ages for at least three years in oak barrels followed by another year in bottle. Superb is a sweet wine made from grapes dried from October until the end of December, followed by a long fermentation and maturation.
