Kabola Winery: Momjan Muscat and amphora wines

At Kabola near Momjan, the Markežić family makes organic wines. They also vinify Malvasia and Teran in clay amphorae buried in the ground.

Different approaches to winemaking

For Malvazija Amfora and Teran Amfora, the family places the grapes with their skins in Georgian clay amphorae buried in the ground. Fermentation and extended maceration take place in these vessels, where the wine remains on its skins until spring. It is then transferred to large wooden casks for further ageing.

They also use Istrian Malvasia to make the sparkling Re and the aged Unica. Alongside Teran Amfora, they produce a separate Teran label, while their Momjan Muscat is semi-sweet.

From the family archive to the present winery

The family keeps a bottle of Momjan Muscat from 1891 in its archive and released its first Malvasia label in 1988. Marino Markežić opened the present winery in 2005, replacing the Markežić wine name with Kabola, the family nickname.

All the grapes come from their own organically farmed vineyards at Štancija and Kanedolo near Momjan. Clay soils with marl predominate at these sites.

Awards for the 2022 and 2025 vintages

At the 2026 Vinistra Wine & Spirits Awards, the 2022 Amfora Teran was awarded gold with 93 points and the 2025 Muškat Momjanski received silver with 88 points. The 2022 Unica Malvazija was also awarded silver with 88 points at the World of Malvasia competition that year.

Booking a visit and choosing a tasting

Guided tastings must be booked in advance. Wine Expert Experience and Temple of Amphora Experience require at least four adults, while VIP Wine Experience can be arranged for two. When booking, visitors choose Croatian or English and one of the offered start times: 10:30, 12:00 or 13:30.

There is free parking beside the winery, and the entrance is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
