Veneranda: olive oil from the Zonta family in Bale
The Zonta family in Bale makes Veneranda extra virgin olive oil from Buža olives. The oil received a silver medal at the 2025 Athena competition.
Buža olives from family groves
On Mladen Zonta’s farm in Bale, the family grows Buža and Rošinjola olives, choosing Buža for Veneranda. The award-winning samples entered in the Athena competition were made entirely from this variety.
In 2024, the family tended groves with 3,500 olive trees and produced between 4,000 and 5,000 litres of oil a year. From 2020, they adapted fertilisation to soil analysis that showed low phosphorus, acidity and excess potassium. They selected nutrients to improve the conditions in which roots absorb nutrients for growth and fruiting.
Medals and chemical analysis
At the Athena competition, Veneranda received double gold in 2020, gold in 2023 and silver in 2025.
Milan Zonta also received a special award at Maslina 2020 for the best result in the assessment of free fatty acids. This recognition concerned chemical analysis, separate from the medals awarded at the international Athena competition.
