OPG Bodiš: organic extra virgin olive oil and honey from southern Istria

Ana and Nikola Bodiš make the organic oils Magran, Vernale and Bodiš in southern Istria. Their family has also kept bees for four generations.

Three blends from two olive-growing sites

Magran is made with olives grown at the site of the same name, while Vernale comes from the Vernal site. Bodiš uses fruit from both sites. Its blend combines Leccino, Pendolino, Rošinjola and Istarska bjelica.

Magran brings together Leccino, Pendolino and Rošinjola. Its bitterness and pungency are milder, with aromas of artichoke, green tomato and wild chicory. Vernale combines Istarska buža, Istarska bjelica, Leccino and Pendolino. Its bitterness and pungency are more pronounced, with an almond note on the finish.

Organic cultivation across five sites

The first olive trees were planted in 2006. Ana and Nikola now tend 4,500 trees in Pomer, Medulin, Šišan, Veli Vrh and Vodnjan. The groves have been managed organically since 2012. The family has also restored eight hectares of neglected old olive groves to extensive cultivation.

Beekeeping and seasonal forage

Around 240 bee colonies overwinter in the family olive groves in southern Istria. During the warmer months, some hives are moved to forage elsewhere in Istria, Gorski Kotar and Kordun. The different forage areas yield blossom honey, honeydew honey and ivy honey. Availability varies with the season.

Scores and awards

OPG Bodiš's score in the Flos Olei guide rose from 89 points in 2024 to 91 in 2025 and 92 in 2026.

Bodiš received a Gourmet Or award at the AVPA competition in Paris in 2025 and a NYIOOC Gold Award a year later. In both 2025 and 2026, Nikola Bodiš was named champion at the Pula olive oil show in the organic extra virgin olive oil category.
