Stjepan Hauser Trail near Rakalj: a coastal walk
The Hauser Trail near Rakalj runs from Cape Sveti Mikula via Luka Bay to Kalavojna. Allow time to return along the same coastal path.
From Sveti Mikula via Luka to Kalavojna
Waymarked walking trail 151 follows the coast below Rakalj, on the western side of the entrance to Raša Bay. From the village, the descent leads towards Cape Sveti Mikula and its small red lighthouse. The path then continues along the shore to Luka Bay and on to Kalavojna. The trail takes its name from cellist Stjepan Hauser, whose family comes from Rakalj.
Luka Bay has a pebble beach, and the wreck of an old boat protrudes from the sea near the approach to the bay. Rocky stretches of shore and coves alternate beside Mediterranean scrub, sage and immortelle, with views towards Cres and Lošinj. For a shorter walk, turn back at Luka instead of continuing to Kalavojna.
Walking time and preparation
The coastal section from Sveti Mikula to Kalavojna is approximately 3.3 kilometres one way, taking about an hour on foot. Returning along the same path brings the total to roughly 6.6 kilometres and two hours of walking. These figures exclude the descent from Rakalj and the climb back to the village.
The trail is graded easy, but the surface is unpaved. Closed shoes with good grip are useful, with water and sun protection in summer. Wet stones can be slippery after rain. On warm sunny days, an early start or a late afternoon walk reduces the time spent in the midday heat.
An extra climb to Stari Rakalj
The remains of Stari Rakalj stand on a hill above the coast, including the ruins of the former castle and the Church of St Agnes. Reaching them involves a separate climb from the coastal path, outside the stated 3.3 kilometres. There is a viewpoint over Raša Bay beside the church.
Distance from Bale: 30 minutes driving
