At Aquarium Pula on Verudela, you can explore Adriatic and tropical aquatic life. A rescue centre also cares for injured sea turtles.

Two exhibitions in former fortifications

The visit begins at the San Giovanni battery, a former Austro-Hungarian military building. Its rooms now house tropical marine and freshwater exhibitions, including an Amazon display. From San Giovanni, you move on to the neighbouring Verudela fort, devoted to the Mediterranean and the Adriatic. Both buildings once formed part of Pula’s defences and are now covered by a single admission ticket.

Allow around two and a half hours for both exhibitions. You can take a break between San Giovanni and Verudela, but once you leave either building, the same ticket does not allow you to enter it again.

Adriatic life, from seagrass meadows to the open sea

At Verudela, the exhibition is arranged by habitat. Seagrass meadows, sandy and rocky seabeds, and the open sea are presented separately, so you can learn about the environments the animals inhabit as you observe them. Seahorses and sharks are among the species you can see at close quarters.

Treating sea turtles and returning them to the sea

The rescue centre has operated since 2000. Vets and biologists care for injured and exhausted sea turtles, monitor their recovery and release those ready to survive in the wild. The centre also takes in other reptiles in need of help. The number of animals receiving treatment varies, and not all of them are accessible to visitors.
