Sovinjak: churches and views over the Mirna valley

Sovinjak stands on a hill near Buzet. Its sundial and churches are landmarks for a village visit overlooking the Mirna valley and vineyards.

Sovinjak lies southwest of Buzet, at about 280 metres above sea level. A stone sundial stands beneath a chestnut tree. From the courtyard of the parish church of St George, you can see the Mirna valley, the Mlun fields and vineyards, with Ćićarija to the north.

Historical records mention Sovinjak as a castle in 1195, with a settlement developing beside it. The castle ceased to exist in the 15th century, when walls were built around the settlement.

St George and St Roch

The present church of St George dates from 1927. Beside it stands an older bell tower from the 16th century, retained from the previous church.

The church of St Roch has a covered porch, known in Istria as a lopica, and a bell gable on its façade. Inside are a Gothic vault and wall paintings by Domenico da Udine.

Wine and Bela nedeja

Wine and olive oil are produced in Sovinjak. Wine is the focus of Bela nedeja, the local folk festival with still and sparkling wines traditionally held in early October.
