In the quiet cove of Banjole, near Pula, a special gastronomic ritual unfolds each evening: the daily catch is transformed into a feast at Konoba Batelina. This humble tavern, situated right on the shoreline, has outgrown its status as a local secret and become a pilgrimage site for seafood lovers. The name Batelina in the local dialect refers to a small shallow-draft fishing boat—a symbolic nod to this place’s deep connection to the sea and fishing.
Today Konoba Batelina is regarded as one of the finest seafood restaurants in Istria and Croatia, where authenticity and top quality can be tasted in every bite.
The Skoko Family Tradition
Konoba Batelina was founded in 2000 by the Skoko family, driven by the vision of combining their two passions—fishing and cooking—into a unique experience for guests.
Danilo Skoko, an experienced fisherman and self-taught chef, together with his wife Alda has transformed a modest tavern with only a few tables into a true family project. Almost every morning, Danilo sails out for a fresh catch, while Alda ensures guests end their meal with her homemade desserts.
In recent years, their son David has devised inventive ways to prepare perfectly ordinary fish.
Through this perfect division of labor and passion, Batelina has grown into a symbol of family tradition that beats to the rhythm of the Adriatic Sea.
Fresh Catch Every Day
The key to Batelina’s success lies in the “sea-to-table” philosophy—the menu is crafted daily based on what the fishermen bring in that morning. Instead of a printed menu, the staff will verbally present the evening’s selection of dishes, since the daily catch dictates every course. This approach guarantees not only freshness but also sustainability: at Batelina, every part of the catch is valued and utilized.
From noble fillets to humble offal—everything finds its place in the kitchen.
Fish livers, for example, are turned into a fine pâté; roe is dried into the delicacy botarga; and even crispy fried fish bones are served as an unusual treat alongside a glass of wine. Often, it’s the humble “blue fish”—sardines, mackerel, or little tunas—that become the stars of the plate at Batelina, proving that exceptional dishes can arise from simple, sustainable catches.
Authentic Flavors of Istria with a Creative Twist
Every dish at Batelina is an ode to Istrian and Mediterranean cuisine, presented in a completely original way. The meal usually begins with a series of small cold appetizers reflecting the richness of Adriatic flavors.
On the table, you might find thinly sliced carpaccio made from the day’s fresh white fish, sardines marinated in sauce, fresh crab salad, or even eel pâté.
After these seafood bites, warm dishes follow: creamy homemade gnocchi with crab meat, pasta sprinkled with aromatic dried roe, or the traditional fish stew (brodetto) of cuttlefish and crab served with warm polenta.
For the main course, you’ll often be offered simply but perfectly grilled fish or scampi—whether scorpionfish, John Dory, or red mullet—served atop a bed of Swiss chard and potatoes, rounding off an authentic Istrian gastronomic experience.
For a sweet finale, Mrs. Alda Skoko prepares homemade desserts like dark chocolate cake with local olive oil or creamy cheesecake with figs poached in wine—unexpected delights that perfectly conclude the maritime menu.
Youngest and Most Renowned in the Family, Chef David Skoko
Over the past two decades, Batelina has grown into a gastronomic institution, and at its heart stands the charismatic chef David Skoko—a self-taught virtuoso, fisherman’s son, and one of the most recognized faces in the Croatian culinary scene. His creativity and skill have earned him media acclaim—hosting his own show on 24Kitchen, making guest appearances in various culinary series and events, and his name has become synonymous with inventive seafood cuisine in Croatia.
Yet despite widespread fame, you can still find him each evening in an apron, personally plating dishes in Batelina’s kitchen, as dedicated to guests as on day one.
The tavern’s reputation long ago transcended local boundaries: Anthony Bourdain dined here during his exploration of Croatian cuisine, and Michelin honored this seafood restaurant with a Bib Gourmand for outstanding quality and approachable prices.
This blend of culinary mastery, maritime tradition, and genuine humility has secured Batelina a special place on the gastronomic map of Istria and Croatia.
