Cisterna Beach
Cisterna encompasses two neighbouring coves, both edged with exceptionally pale pebbles. A sandbank runs below the surface a short distance from shore and is easiest to notice when the sea level is lower.
It is reached through the shallows, bringing the unexpected feel of sand underfoot on an otherwise rocky western Istrian coast. Sea level and weather alter its shape, so it is neither a permanent little island nor a view that looks identical every day.
A cove outside the urban routine
A local road leads to Cisterna and its final section is unpaved. There is no town promenade or line of permanent businesses, so check the approach before leaving and plan to be self-sufficient.
That character is not an empty space waiting to be filled. Leave the car only where permitted and walk the final metres on existing tracks, so the pale shore and belt of Mediterranean scrub do not slowly disappear beneath improvised access routes.
