Mesečev zaliv in Strunjan: a beach below the flysch cliff
Mesečev zaliv is a pebble beach below Strunjan’s flysch cliff. Access is on foot, with reserve rules and a risk of rockfalls.
The bay on the northern shore of the Strunjan peninsula is also known as Holy Cross Bay. Pebbles, stones and larger rocks line the shore beneath layers of marl and sandstone. The sea, rain and wind erode these rocks and reshape the foot of the cliff. This natural shore is part of the Strunjan reserve and has no bathing facilities.
The descent via Strunjan Cross
The walking approach passes the Church of the Apparition of Mary and the white Strunjan Cross, then follows a marked path down to the sea. Restoration work in 2025 included 174 stone steps made from local sandstone along roughly 250 metres of the descent. Footwear with slip-resistant soles is needed for this approach. The steps and steep terrain restrict access for visitors with reduced mobility.
Restoring the path has not removed the risk of rockfalls. Do not linger beneath bare, steep rock faces or approach the cliff edge from above. Stones can fall anywhere along the bay, with greater risk after heavy rain and during winter temperature changes. Even a gentler, vegetated slope offers no guarantee of safety.
Reserve rules and parking
Keep to the marked footpaths. Fires and staying in the reserve at night are prohibited, so the beach is not a place to camp overnight.
If arriving by car, allow for works at the car park beside Stjuža lagoon. Its redevelopment and planting scheme were announced in October 2026, with completion planned by spring 2027.
For bathing with showers and a drinking fountain, Fiesa Beach near Piran has paved walking areas and seasonal toilets.
