Savudrija beach in Bašanija: swimming beside the boat cranes
Savudrija beach in Bašanija has pebble entry points and rocky stretches. Wooden boat cranes stand by the shore along Svjetioničarska street.
On Bašanija’s west coast, beside Camping Savudrija, pebbly stretches alternate with stone slabs and rocks. You can enter the water over pebbles, while water shoes are useful on the rocky sections. The beach lies south of Savudrija lighthouse, near the junction of Svjetioničarska and Istarska streets.
Wooden boat cranes
The wooden cranes along this shore are known as grue. Fishermen used them to lift small boats out of the sea, above the reach of waves. Their posts, ropes and pulleys show how boats were kept on this exposed rocky coast.
The lighthouse, built in 1818, and Savudrija’s old harbour are two separate places to visit. Our Savudrija guide explains the harbour’s development, the building of the lighthouse and the use of the boat cranes.
Getting there from Bašanija
From Bašanija, follow Istarska street to its junction with Svjetioničarska, where the road approaches the sea. There is a car park beside the junction, inland from the beach. From the road, you reach a strip of pebbly and rocky shore.
You can also reach the Savudrija coast on a longer coastal walk from Umag via Stella Maris, Katoro and Zambratija. The route combines asphalt, gravel and dirt paths.
