Martulina Beach in Peroj: pebbles and historic piers
Martulina is a pebble beach on Peroj’s coastal promenade. Bring a mask and snorkel to see the remains of Austro-Hungarian piers.
Walking along the coast
From Portić Bay, the coastal promenade takes you to Martulina in about 15 minutes on foot. There is a children’s playground beside the beach, and the promenade continues towards Fažana. Coarse pebbles cover the water’s edge on this stretch of Peroj’s coast.
Remains of the Fažana Channel defences
Near the playground, a broad stone pier extends from the shore, with its outer section collapsed. Further out, two parallel piers with iron posts remain in the sea.
During the First World War, an anti-submarine barrier stretched from Cape Mertulin, today’s Martulina, towards Mali Brijun. A steel net or thick steel cable protected the northern entrance to the Fažana Channel, then an auxiliary anchorage for the Austro-Hungarian navy.
Sponges and shoals of small fish live around the stone remains, and large mooring rings are visible on the submerged quay. Do not swim beneath the stone blocks or the sunken quay, or remove historic objects from the seabed.
